He undertook musculoskeletal training on metabolic bone disorders <em>in New York University Medical Center<\/em> and on MR imaging-MSK applications in <em>Manchester Medical School\/Manchester Royal Infirmary<\/em>. His PhD (1989) was focused on the development and applications of quantitative computed tomography in metabolic bone disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Karantanas has been given more than 650 invited lectures in 37 countries and is a regular faculty member at the \u201cAnnual meeting of the European Society of Radiology (<em>ECR)\u201d,<\/em> \u201c<em>International Diagnostic Course Davos<\/em> (IDKD)\u201d- musculoskeletal disorders, \u201c<em>International Skeletal Society\u201d, <\/em>\u201c<em>Erasmus courses Musculoskeletal MRI\u201d, \u201cSchool of MRI\/ESMRMB\u201d, <\/em>\u201c<em>European School of Radiology-ESOR\u201d and <\/em>\u201c<em>European Society of musculoske-letal Radiology-ESSR\u201d<\/em>. &nbsp;He is the author of more than 310 publications in peer review journals (~<em>8.000 citations in Google Scholar, h-index 48, i10-index 163)<\/em>, 7 books (4 international), and 80 chapters in books. Prof. Karantanas is a <em>reviewer<\/em> in 35 Medline journals, <em>Editorial Board<\/em> in 5 and has been a <em>Guest Editor<\/em> in 4 issues of Medline journals. His main research is focused on imaging of musculoskeletal disorders including trauma and emergencies, bone marrow, osteoporosis, sports injuries, hip joint, osteoarthritis, spondyloarthropathies, and applications of newer MR sequences.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dr Karantanas is past President of <em>European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology, <\/em>past Presidentof the<em>Hellenic Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology,<\/em> past member of the <em>Educational Committee <\/em>of the<em> European Association of Radiology<\/em>, member of the <em>ESOR Programme Planning Committee<\/em>, member of the <em>Educational Committee <\/em>and<em> Research Committee of the European Society of Radiology,<\/em> and General Secretary and Presidentof the<em> Hellenic College of Radiology<\/em>. He has been a <em>Visiting Professor<\/em> in 3 national and 2 European Universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Karantanas is currently Professor of Radiology<em>-Medical School-University of Crete<\/em>, Chairman of the <em>Dpt of Medical Imaging-Heraklion University Hospital<\/em>, Affiliated Researcher in <em>Computational BioMedicine Laboratory and Head Advanced Hybrid Imaging Systems\/Institute of Computer Science-Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH)<\/em>, Member of the <em>Sports Injuries Subcommittee\/ESSR,<\/em> and board member of the &#8220;<em>Greek Atomic Energy Commission<\/em>&#8220;.
