Short bio

Mario  is an academic musculoskeletal radiologist and a clinical radiologist focused on sports injury especially in high performing athletes, focused on detailed clinical relevant imaging assessment of small joints, especially foot, ankle, elbow and wrist. Close collaboration with clinical partners is key. He is appointed Preferred Partner of the National Olympic Committee.

He is co-founder of ACES, Academic Center for evidence based Sports medicine, an athlete centered institute in which tailored clinical care is combined with front running research on sports specific Imaging. The center was awarded IOC accreditation in 2015 and in 2019.

He is also founder of the Medical Imaging Quantification Center (MIQC) of the Radiology department. The center explores the development of musculoskeletal imaging biomarkers and its translation in clinical practice.

Mario is director of Amsterdam Movement Sciences (AMS), one of eight research institutes of Amsterdam UMC, focusing on a wide range of movement and related research.

He focusses on mentor and guidance of young students and researchers in a wide field.
He is (co)author of over 350 peer reviewed papers and more than 10 book chapters. He is the supervisor of 10 PhD thesis projects.
In education Mario is keen on interaction with student both in lecture hall as well as small group teaching. He had been chair board medical school and is currently chair is exam board of Medicine.
