Dr Elena Drakonaki is an Assistant Professor of Anatomy at the Medical school of the University of Crete, and the current President of the European Society of Skeletal Radiology (ESSR).
She trained in Radiology at the Heraklion University Hospital and Birmingham University Hospital, UK and as a Musculoskeletal Radiology and molecular imaging/PET/CT Fellow at the Oxford Nuffield Orthopedic and Churchill Cancer, UK respectively. She holds the European Diploma of Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK) and a PhD (MRI for thalassemia) and PostDoc (MRI for sarcoma) research thesis from the University of Crete Medical School. She has served as Vice President and President Elect of ESSR (2024-2026) and as the Chair of the Educational Committee of ESSR being responsible for the ESSR Diploma in MSK radiology (2021-2024). She is active in the European Radiology Society (ESR) and International Skeletal Society (ISS) in several committees, including ESR Education Committee, ISS Research and Education Committee, Evaluation committee for the ESR Fellowships, and ECR Program Planning Committee 2024, 2025 and 2026. She is also the current vice-president of the Hellenic Society of Skeletal Radiology. She has contributed as author/co-author in more than 110 peer-reviewed papers (Scopus h-index 25, >4500 citations) including ESSR and EFSUMB guidelines. Her research and clinical interests include imaging anatomy, musculoskeletal imaging, ultrasound elastography and intervention,
