Dimitris Tsakiris is a Research Director (Full Professor level) at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). He holds a B.S. (Eng. Dipl.) degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park, USA. He has been a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow at INRIA in Sophia-Antipolis, France. While on leave from FORTH, he was a Reader in Intelligent Robotics at the Department of Computer Science of Aberystwyth University, U.K.
His research interests include biologically-inspired robotics, biomedical robotics, embodied intelligence, soft-material robotics and control, in particular investigating issues related to autonomy, motion control, design, mechanics, sensing, smart materials, as well as computational modeling and simulation. He is exploring the application of this research to problems in field and service robotics, in underwater, amphibious and aerial robotics, in medical robotics, especially robotic endoscopy, in environmental monitoring and exploration, search-and-rescue operations, defense, and planetary exploration.
Dr. Tsakiris has published in leading professional journals and conferences, and has participated extensively in funded EU, UK and Greek research projects. He has taught and advised research students at ICS – FORTH, the University of Crete, Aberystwyth University, and INRIA. Moreover, he has been an invited speaker to leading European and U.S.A. universities, research institutions, and professional meetings.
