Optoelectronics and Laser
Type
Course Code
Teaching Semester
ECTS Credits
Syllabus
The course combines a general overview of the field of optoelectronics with an in-depth introduction to the operation of the most typical and perhaps the most exciting optoelectronic device, the diode laser. Emphasis is placed in dealing with problems of practical interest that require some use of computer-aided methods.
Syllabus
- Brief review on semiconductors, quantum wells and waveguides.
- General introduction to laser diodes and other optoelectronic devices.
- Description of the operation of laser diodes.
- Mirrors and cavities for laser diodes.
- Optical gain in quantum wells.
- Variable wavelength lasers
Recommended Bibliography
The main textbook of the course is the «Diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits» by L. Coldren and S. Corzine. Copies of the book can be found in the main library of UoC. Some copies and notes will be distributed to the students.
Student Performance Evaluation
Students are assessed by the delivery of a set of exercises during the semester and a final examination in the form of a take-home exam.
Prerequisite Courses
Any Introductory Semiconductor Physics course such as for instance ΕΤΥ 242 and ETY 481, and any introductory Solid State Physics course such as EΤΥ 305.
